Checkout Lower Than The Ecommerce Average

Checkout Lower Than The Ecommerce Average

If your checkout is lower than the ecommerce average, this tells us that your users aren’t finding their way to the checkout page or the usability of your online store is causing them to abandon the purchase.

This is a critical stage in the sales funnel for an online store – the user has added products or services to their cart, and now you need to make the checkout process as intuitive and user friendly as possible, with nil or minimal barriers to getting to the checkout page and completing the purchase.

Common Issues with Checkout

Based on tens of thousands of hours of research into ecommerce usability, we know that there are hundreds of things you can do, and not do, to maximize the likelihood that users of your online store will successfully move through the checkout process.

The following are the most common usability issues that affect users getting to checkout. Fixing these issues should see an improvement in checkout views and result in a boost in your conversion rates.

  1. Have a ‘place order’ button above the fold at the review step
  2. Always provide users with a “guest checkout” option
  3. Make “guest checkout” the most prominent option
  4. Make social media account creation secondary to traditional email account creation
  5. Have minimal password creation requirements
  6. Save account creation for the confirmation step
  7. Allow users to ‘save’ cart items, and place saved items within the cart page
  8. Each step in the checkout process should have a corresponding process step
  9. Never disturb users with feedback requests during the checkout flow
  10. Hide coupon and promotional fields behind a link
