Product Views are Lower on Mobile

If your product views are lower on a mobile compared with desktop, this tells us that product discovery on mobile is not as easy or intuitive as it is on a desktop. This can have a significant impact on your ecommerce conversion rate, because the higher the product views on your online store, the more likely a user will be to add your product to their cart, and the higher your conversion rate will be as a result.

Product discovery covers the three methods a user of your online store will utilize to find the product or service they’re looking for. Those methods are:

  • Onsite search (the search located on your own online store)
  • Homepage layout and site navigation
  • Category pages

Users of your online store discover products using one or more of these methods, and if your mobile product views are lower than desktop, you might have issues with one, two or all three.

Common Issues with Product Discovery

Based on tens of thousands of hours of research into ecommerce usability, we know that there are hundreds of things you can do, and not do, to maximize the likelihood that users of your online store will find the product or service they’re looking for.

The following are the most common usability issues that affect product discovery. Fixing these issues should see an improvement in product views and result in a boost in your conversion rates.

  1. Make product categories the first level of the main navigation
  2. Provide category specific filters for relevant sitewide search results
  3. Support keyword query suggestions within Autocomplete
  4. Provide category specific filters for all key product specs
  5. Allow users to filter by “product status” where relevant
  6. Always allow users to combine multiple filter options of the same filter type
  7. Return users to the same place in the product list when returning from the product page
  8. Always have thumbnails for all list items
